Who I am

I'm Tjok, an environmental engineer by degree and an LCA expert by profession. At work, I calculate the environmental impact of products and help companies understand, measure and reduce it. My job is all about supporting sustainable decisions.

But that alone doesn't feel like enough. In my daily life, I see the effects of climate change and other environmental problems more and more, and nowhere as clearly as in two of my biggest hobbies. When I go scuba diving, I see bleached coral. When I go mountaineering, I see glaciers becoming more dangerous to cross. Climate change is no longer something far away. The time to act is now, and all of us have a part to play.

Why ClimateCart

In my work, carbon footprints are everyday numbers. For most people they stay abstract, and it's hard to act on numbers you have no feel for.

That doesn't mean it's all up to consumers. Governments need the right policies, and companies need to make their production more sustainable. But these don't happen in isolation. Citizens have real power when they use it together, with their wallet and with their vote. Bold climate measures only pass when enough people support them, and that support starts with awareness.

That is what ClimateCart is for: making the climate impact of food easy to see for everyone, every time they shop, until 1 kg, 10 kg or 100 kg of CO₂ starts to mean something. Awareness is not an alternative to systemic change. It is the foundation for it.

Read the mission

A hobby project

I built ClimateCart on my own, in my free time, next to my day job. It's free, with no ads and no subscription, and it will stay that way. The aim is to make this information available to everyone. There is no marketing budget, so every person who tells a friend about the app, or hangs up the poster, really helps.
